Signing Proves Huge Success
March 14, 2001 9:51: Children from Park Hill Junior school have found the can break down communication barriers and raise money for charity.
The children, aged between 10 and 11, attend the only after-school sign language class for hearing children in the borough.
They are taught by Teresa Porter who learnt how to sign at evening classes.
"I went to evening classes five or six years ago because my great grandmother was deaf and some of my friends were too. They would be lip reading or writing things down all the time. There was a communication barrier."
Bill Yearley, head teacher of Park Hill Junior, approached Mrs Porter to start up the children's class. He said: "I think we are one of the only junior schools to run such a club and about a quarter of Year 6 participate. It is very popular."
Last Christmas they raised almost £1,000 for charity by signing carols.
