WET SPONGES greeted Sainsbury’s charity cyclists when they arrived at the Keighley store as part of a county-wide ride.

Three staff members from the Keighley supermarket were among a 25-strong team drawn from the region’s stores.

Over two days they called at all the Sainsbury’s branches in the region, including Ripon, Leeds, Harrogate, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

The cyclists were treated to pizza and hot chicken with drinks before heading off again towards Halifax.

Staff from each town raised money for their own store’s chosen charity of the year.

The Keighley riders, Jon Smith, Mark Tillotson and Richard Hall, were raising money for the Friends of Phoenix Special School.

When the ‘peloton’ reached the Keighley store, in Cavendish Street, the cyclists discovered the Friends had set up a tombola, wet sponge stocks and other games.

The Friends of Phoenix Special School raised £330 with their stalls, and there was a further £250 from the cyclists’ sponsorship.

Among those receiving a wet sponge in the face during the fun day was Faye Jessop, deputy store manager at Keighley Sainsbury’s.

Faye said she was surprised to see so many people queuing to throw sponges at her, but thought it was worth getting wet for charity.
