A KEIGHLEY chippy which opened just seven months ago has battered the opposition to reach the finals of a prestigious awards scheme.

Old Time Fisheries left others floundering as it coasted into the last stage of the National Fish & Chip Awards.

Husband-and-wife Mark and Jane Faichney ran the West Lane premises as a newsagents until deciding late last year on a change of direction.

"We'd never had a chip shop before but we were determined to do it right," said Mrs Faichney, 50.

"We enrolled on a fish friers' course before launching into the new venture.

"One of our suppliers nominated us for the award. A judge posing as a customer then came round and after announcing who she was carried out an inspection.

"When I learned we had got through to the final I couldn't believe it – it's still sinking in!

"It's fantastic news and we're so proud."

The shop is competing against two others for the 'best newcomer' accolade in the awards, organised by Seafish.

The body, whose aim is to improve efficiency and standards across the industry, will now carry out a further 'mystery' judging.

Criteria assessed include product quality, customer service, food preparation procedures, hygiene, innovation, staff training and development, promotional activity and approaches to sustainable sourcing.

Paul Williams, for Seafish, said: "The best newcomer award continues to get stronger each year. Deciding on a final three was a very challenging task.

"There are some incredibly talented individuals who are dedicating their careers to ensuring our industry continues to thrive. It's very rewarding to be able to acknowledge their hard work and dedication."

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in London in January.
