A GREENGROCER at Keighley’s Morrisons store reached the finals of a national competition.

Christopher Polak, from the Worth Way supermarket, last Thursday (November 13) completed in the finals of Morrisons’ annual Mastercraft contest.

The annual in-house tournament recognises Morrisons store colleagues who are experts in specialist trades.

These include butchers, bakers, fishmongers, cheesemongers, wine advisors, florists, cake shop and produce specialists.

Christopher faced tough competition from five other finalists competing in his category, selected from across Morrisons’ 510 stores.

After a fierce final at Morrisons’ headquarters in Bradford, Christopher missed out on first place to Dan Rimell from Stratford-upon-Avon.

The finalists were tested on product identification, specification, presentation, creativity and ingenuity.

Christopher said was proud to have been shortlisted.

He said: “Not many people realise that the produce we stock requires specialist knowledge to be properly looked after and kept fresh, and that we are fully qualified greengrocers so it’s great to achieve some recognition for this.”

Morrisons head of craft skills Mickey Greenhalgh said: “We’re proud of the traditional skills on show in our stores and we like to reward those specialists that really stand out.

“We have more skilled craftsmen and women on our counters than any other supermarket and Christopher is a credit to his trade – we wish him the best of luck for the final.”
