STAFF at a Keighley bistro have brushed up on their awareness of the risks posed by food allergies as part of a national drive to safeguard diners' health.

The staff at the Lemon Tree, in Oakworth Road, have gained new food safety qualifications in advance of rules due to come into force on December 13.

Cath Harney, one of the directors of the business, explained: "The rules will ensure people can easily see when foods contain any of the common allergens, which include peanuts, gluten, milk, eggs and more.

"The new regulations stipulate people have a right to know which of the 14 common allergens are contained in food.

"Our staff are newly qualified by The Food Standards Agency in respect of allergens, and have improved their ability to assist customers with allergy information. We do attempt to be ahead of the game where possible."

Lemon Tree staff member Pablo Vasquez added: “Ahead of the new regulations we've created allergy specific information to complement our menu. Our staff are happy to advise on ingredients used in the preparation of our meals."
