A MAJOR initiative designed to bring quality engineering training back to Keighley and the Aire Valley is due to be launched today. (Jan 22)

An Industrial Centre of Excellence (ICE) is being formally opened in Keighley Campus Leeds City College.

The ICE is a joint project involving the college, Bradford Council and Oakbank School and will create strong links between employers and schools, colleges and universities to improve young people's prospects and develop a skilled workforce.

The initiative is focusing on advanced manufacturing and engineering, including creative and digital technologies.

Students will begin their engineering studies at Oakbank, then progress to the centre itself at Keighley Campus. The Keighley Campus ICE is one of a number of Industrial Centres of Excellence being funded by Bradford Council.

Oakbank School head teacher, David Maxwell, said: "We are really excited about the project and pleased that the partnership is moving forward.

"Working with business operations and sales manager Chris Stott from the college is very inspiring. His drive and ambition will really encourage our students to get the engineering skills they need for a successful career."

A spokesman for the ICE project said: "This will bring together local schools and employers to support young people wishing to enter a career in the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

"The ICE facility reflects the clean and high tech modern engineering and manufacturing environment, and is a far cry from the traditional image of the sector.

"The centre will be managed by a board of employers, who will ensure the curriculum is relevant, and that it prepares students appropriately for the world of work.

"The ICE aims to make all project work industry based, and as real as possible, by working closely with the board.

"In addition, all students attending the ICE are offered work placement opportunities with local employers."

Today's launch runs from 4pm to 5pm and will be attended by Keighley town mayor councillor Graham Mitchell, along with representatives from the ICE Board, Bradford Council and local employers.

The occasion will feature the unveiling of an official ICE plaque with speeches, a tour and machinery demonstrations. Visit www.keighleyice.org for more details.
