A SERIES of factory open days is planned to give young people the chance to look behind the scenes at some of Keighley's most successful manufacturing firms.

The tours will offer the chance to see what working in a modern plant is like and to question staff.

Opening its doors next Friday (Jan 29) between 4pm and 6pm is Byworth Boilers, based at the Parkwood Boiler Works, Parkwood Street, Keighley.

It has a history of recruiting apprentices.

Behind the initiative is the Industrial Centre of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering, based at Leeds City College Keighley Campus.

"This is a rare opportunity for young people and their parents and carers to see behind the scenes of our companies," said the college's head of business engagement, Chris Stott.

"Many manufacturing and engineering companies offer excellent salaries once qualified and will support staff in developing both practically and academically.

"The engineering sector needs some 1.8 million new employees by 2020 and there really has never been a better time to investigate this area as a career option and a genuine alternative to the traditional routes to university."
