CLOSE co-operation between a Steeton-based firm and West Yorkshire Trading Standards (WYTSS) has been recognised with an award.

The initiative, which involves trading standards and Acorn Stairlifts, has been "Highly Commended" in the National Department for Business Innovation & Skills, Regulatory Delivery – Primary Authority Awards.

Regulatory Delivery, a directorate of Business Innovation & Skills, operates the Primary Authority scheme which ensures consistent, good quality regulation while giving businesses a say in their regulation.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards has 75 Primary Authority partnerships with businesses in West Yorkshire and beyond which include links with businesses and trade associations covering a vast range of industry and legal frameworks.

Acorn Stairlifts and WYTSS were nominated for an award in the Partnership Award category in recognition of the advice and support offered to the company regarding its commercial practices.

The 2016 Primary Authority Awards panel described the arrangement as “an excellent example of how a partnership can work to improve a business’s marketing practices, contributing to improved business reputation and growth.”

Acorn is the only supplier of stairlifts or mobility equipment ever to have been commended at the Primary Authority Awards.

Company secretary Dave Belmont said: "Acorn is proud of its customer service and its partnership with West Yorkshire Trading Standards.

"When we are seen in the same light as retail giants such as Asda, Boots, and not-for-profit organisations like Anchor Housing, we must be doing something right.

"Acorn supplies its stairlifts mainly to elderly consumers. Receiving excellent support, guidance and training from West Yorkshire Trading Standards has allowed us to grow our business both in the UK and abroad."

Members of the Acorn and West Yorkshire Trading Standards partnership travelled to London for the awards ceremony last month (May 19) to celebrate the successes of the Primary Authority scheme and the outstanding support provided by all involved.

They were presented with a certificate signed by Anna Soubry, Minister of State for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Jackie White, of West Yorkshire Trading Standards, said: "This service has had a successful partnership with Acorn Stairlifts for the past three years. Openness and transparency are at the heart of the success of our partnership with Acorn."

Councillor Val Slater, chairman of the West Yorkshire Joint Service’s Committee, added: “We are delighted that the partnership has been recognised at these national awards.

"Trading standards will continue to support local business to grow through offering compliance advice and support.

"As in this case, trading standards work with local businesses to ensure their growth and development.”
