KEIGHLEY has the proud boast that it’s home to the last remaining pram factory in the UK.

Now the brand, Silver Cross, is celebrating 140 years of trading.

The firm has mushroomed beyond recognition since William Wilson wheeled out the world’s first ‘baby carriage’ from a workshop in Leeds.

Little did he know that his idea would revolutionise parenting and the company he founded would still be operating nearly a century-and-a-half later.

Today, Silver Cross products are exported to territories globally.

More than ten million babies have enjoyed their first views of the world from one of the famous prams, which are synonymous with royalty and celebrities as well as ordinary families across the world.

Nick Paxton, the company’s chief executive officer, said: “Silver Cross has been at the forefront of product development over the years, with our designs driven from consumer feedback and the needs of parents and babies.

“We have a saying here at Silver Cross: there is no secret to making the world’s finest prams; just take 140 years of experience and add the finest materials, the rest is easy.

“I am honoured to be part of a company which prides itself on providing children with the best start in life.

“This commitment to beautifully-functional and aspirational nursery products puts Silver Cross on the map as a great British brand – and long may it continue.”

Product ranges have expanded over the years from prams and pushchairs to also include car seats, nursery furniture and bedding,

But the Silver Cross factory in Keighley has preserved much of the traditional craftsmanship and techniques spanning the firm’s history, such as original anvils and tooling methods.

“Today Silver Cross still stands for the same original principles that William Wilson held dear – uncompromising quality, painstaking craftsmanship and innovative design,” said Mr Paxton.

“Throughout its lifetime, these principles have consistently kept the firm at the forefront of the nursery market with outstanding innovation and style.

“The brand is firmly established as a household name due to its commitment to meeting the changing needs of modern parents.

“The current collection is fresh and contemporary, featuring state-of-the-art technology, luxurious materials and seamless attention to detail.”

The company’s anniversary celebrations were launched this month with a party.
