INCREASING numbers of workers across the region are getting on their bikes.

More than 25 firms have now achieved 'Bike Friendly Business' accreditation from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority CityConnect programme.

Companies have received free advice on how best to accommodate cyclists and the provision of facilities such as bike parking, showers and lockers.

CityConnect has also offered guidance on cycle training, maintenance sessions, routes and promotional campaigns.

Bronze, silver and gold accreditations are available and eligible businesses can apply for grants of up to £5,000.

The aim of the scheme is to have 250 businesses accredited, and over £400,000 in grants distributed, by the end of January next year.

Councillor Keith Wakefield, chairman of the combined authority, said: "Bikes are brilliant for business.

"Employees who travel by bicycle typically take fewer days off sick and they arrive at work feeling more alert and are more productive. It's a great solution to car parking problems too.

"Through our CityConnect programme we are also working to improve cycling infrastructure across West Yorkshire, to make people's journeys even easier.

"I would urge businesses to get in touch with the CityConnect team to start seeing the benefits that our accredited Bike Friendly Businesses are already feeling."
