The owner of a menswear store and his right-hand man are celebrating a milestone.
Steven Bower, proprietor of Michael Bower Menswear, and shop manager David Kehoe have together notched up 50 years’ service.
“We’re proud of our achievement and happy to report that while the picture in the retail sector is gloomy — with big players going to the wall — this is not the case with independent service-orientated specialists like ourselves,” said Steven, who took over the Bradford Road, Riddlesden, business in 1988.
The firm was founded in 1950 by Paul Walowka, a master tailor who went on to become chairman of the Federation of Merchant Tailors. In 1978 he took on and trained David, who received the “best student” award at Jacob Kramer College, Leeds, which specialised in training up-and-coming tailors.
Under Steven’s tenure, the shop has been refurbished three times. The half-century landmark has seen the launch of a new website — mbmenswear.co.uk — and it will be celebrated with a programme of events.
Steven said: “Our half century partnership provides us with a golden opportunity to promote the business.
“A lot of people still think we are suit-only specialists but they couldn’t be further off the mark.”
