Built on a site given by the Duke of Devon-shire, Holy Trinity Church was also consecrated in 1882 – seven months after St Peter’s (see below) – to minister to the spiritual needs of the growing Lawkholme district.

It was demolished in 1972.

Here, early in 1938, the then vicar, the Reverend H G Wilks, had tried a highly controversial experiment – free Sunday night dances on condition the dancers had first attended a church service.

Besides boosting congregations this, it was hoped, would provide an alternative to young people “dawdling aimlessly up and down Keighley’s streets” on Sunday evenings.

The few weeks of its operation witnessed increasing queues for church and dance! But widespread opposition was aroused. “The spiritual influence of the church,”declared Mr Wilks’ critics, “will not be strengthened by mixing dancing slippers and prayer-books”. Predictably, the dances ceased.
