Princess Mary – by then the Princess Royal – returned to Keighley on May 19, 1943, during fundraising Wings for Victory Week.
She is seen below with Mayor, Tom Snowden, in the Town Hall Square, where she ceremonially marked an indicator at the sum so far raised – although only mid-week this was already £897,520.
By the end of the week, Keighley would have reached an impressive total of £1,453,147 in war bonds, savings and interest-free loans.
Under wartime conditions, the Keighley News could only briefly report the Princess Royal’s busy local itinerary.
She inspected a guard of honour formed by members of the WAAF and the Girls’ Training Corps, and visited the Technical College, the Hospital Supplies Depot in Cooke Lane, WVS headquarters and the Woodbine Day Nursery in Skipton Road.
This catered for the children of mothers on war work, costing five shillings per child per week.
There, the Princess Royal – the third child and only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary – saw 47 children having tea in the garden, wearing sun bonnets specially made by staff for the occasion.
The photograph has been supplied by Kevin Seaton, of Shann Lane in Keighley.
