Keighley War Weapons Week – from November 30 to December 7, 1940 – featured a German Messerschmitt on view in the Town Hall Square, an open parachute in the Cavendish Street Air Cadet headquarters and this ‘Bombers and Bombs for Victory’ shop-window display.
‘A Cash Bomb Will Fall As Each £10,000 Is Reached’, reads the central notice. ‘Put Your Hand Down And Help To Drop The Whole “Stick”. Come On, Keighley!’ Reflecting the First World War fundraising spirit, the week netted a total of £1,040,435 – or £18.7s.5d per head of population – through the sale of War and Defence Bonds, National Savings and interest-free loans.
