Yvonne and Graham Parker have sent this portrait of the New Regent Dance Orchestra, photographed about 1926 before a backdrop of East Riddlesden Hall.
Mr Parker’s grandfather, Joseph Frederick Birch, of Cullingworth, stands third from the left.
The other players, from left, are H Rodwell and W Sugden, of Haworth, G Schofield, of Ingrow, and A Lister and B Rodwell, of Keighley.
Local dance bands proliferated between the wars – the Ambassadors, the Trocaderians, Charles Briggs’s Broadway Syncopators and many more. Popular venues included the Municipal and Baths Halls and a skating rink.
In 1927, the Criterion Ballroom in Low Mill Lane advertised was “the most up-to-date in Yorkshire”.
