Part of an earlier clearance scheme, below was the moment when a notable Keighley landmark, the Corn Mill chimney at Damside, bit the dust in 1934.

The Corn Mill chimney had stood 80 feet high and was built entirely of stone.

For 23 hours four men with sledge-hammers and chisels enlarged a cavity just above its plinth. It was expected to fall by a Thursday afternoon, but it held on till the Friday evening. It was “quite a successful fall, entirely in accordance with the arrangements of those in charge of the work”. Some 3,000 spectators were covered in a huge cloud of dust.
