Shortages were by no means confined to food and gradually Keighley acquired a pinched look.

Lighting was reduced through fear of German Zeppelins. Tram services were cut as tracks and highways deteriorated and problems of maintenance mounted. Rationing of fuel and government restrictions on the supply of paper forced the public library to curtail its opening hours and reduce the number of newspapers in its reading room.

Some business vehicles tried to beat a petrol shortage by converting to run on coal gas, creating the unwieldy effect demonstrated here by wholesale druggists G L Greenwood and Company.
