Epitomising those musicians who for generations upheld a lively local tradition, the late George S Sugden – uncle of Keighley’s stage and television star, the late Mollie Sugden – sits at the organ of the former Upper Green Congregational Chapel.

At the age of 17, George Sugden had become pianist at the Ingrow Congregational Mission when it opened in a school laundry in 1908, graduating to the organ at the Marlborough Street Mission.

He started as organist at Upper Green in 1920 and held the post for more than 40 years.

On the demolition of the Upper Green Chapel in 1964, he played the organ at Bingley Independent Methodist Church till he was 84. He died in 1976, aged 85.

The late Mr RL Rawling, a colleague of Mr Sugden’s at Keighley electricians, JS Ramsbottom and Co, took the photograph during their dinner break.
