THE Haworth Public Prize Band in its heyday was a local institution, tracing its history back to the mid-1800s and winning innumerable competitions.
This photograph appears on a postcard dated November, 1926, whose message, from band secretary W Binns to tenor Frank Smith of Oakworth, reads: "Please let me have your songs for November 8 per return".
The concert in question was the second of a season organised by the band, held in the Bronte Cinema on a Sunday. Frank Smith was joined by soprano Muriel Mason while the band, conducted by Arthur Grace, played selections from Sullivan and Schubert. T Chapman contributed a cornet solo called Hailstorm, then accompanied Master H Jackson in a duet, Besses o' th' Barn. "Encores", noted the press, "were numerous".
