THIS Edwardian view of a lesser-known side of Haworth is not really identifiable nowadays because trees have since grown over the hills on the right, while more recent housing has filled in the area between the terraces on the left.

The haymakers are on the Oakworth bank of the River Worth, with the Spring Head Road bridge behind them on the right. North View Terrace stands on the left, with Alma Street and Baden Street further up the hill in the middle and right hand background.

The photograph has been supplied by Brian Thurling, of Thornbank Avenue, Oakworth. His grandfather, Herbert Thurling, is standing on top of the hay, with his son Bertie beside him. Herbert Thurling was coachman for the Newsolme family connected with worsted spinners and manufacturers George Hattersley Sons and Co Ltd, who ran Mytholmes, Providence and Spring Head mills.

This scene typifies the days when everybody, man, woman and child, helped at haytime – a seasonal reason for pupils' absences often noted in local school log books.
