SOME old photographs include mysteries, and there is a case in point. It shows the Goat’s Head Inn at Steeton, 100 or more years ago.
John Smith was licensed to retail British and foreign ale, porter and tobacco. He offered good stabling and accommodation, and catered for cyclists.
The Keighley Corps of the St John Ambulance Brigade kept an equipment box beside the left-hand window, while the building on the far left housed a call office of the National Telephone Company.
So much is clear. But why has this group of men and boys gathered? What has aroused their interest?
The horses being held on either side of the door. Provide a probable clue. They look splendidly groomed, and their manes have been deliberately plaited. So have their notable riders gone into the Goat’s Head? We shall never know.
The photograph has been supplied by Kevin Seaton, of Shann Lane, Keighley.
