HAWORTH’S Proclamation ceremony came ten days later than Keighley’s, following a memorial service at the parish church. Here chairman of the District Council J Ackroyd reads from the church steps.
The crowd – some of whom don’t appear to be paying too much attention – includes members of the Haworth District Council, the police and fire brigade, and organisations which had officially attended the service, the St John Ambulance Brigade, the Territorials of the West Riding Regiment, Haworth Brass Band, the Church Lads’ Brigade and the Pewit Patrol of Boy Scouts.
Local memorial services for the late King Edward VII stressed his role as “the Peacemaker”, with the Keighley News commenting on his “display not of kingliness but of kindliness, and he succeeded wherever he went in conveying an impression not so much of power as of peacefulness”.
Tragically, with the Great War approaching, the reign of his successor could not be so blessed.
