SEEN here in the 1890s from Townfield Gate – the site of the present bus station – is the former United Methodist Free Church in Cavendish Street. Opened in 1868, this “commodious and handsome building” represented a denomination which had originally broken away from the Wesleyans during a dispute over an organ!
It was popularly known as “t’Cock Chapel” in honour of its weathercock, 125 feet up atop the tallest spire in Keighley.
Closed for worship in 1937, it spent its latter years as headquarters of the Keighley Squadron of the Air Training Corps before being demolished in 1952. Its best-remembered details are probably the RAF roundels painted on its door.
