Fred Greenwood had opened his Fell Lane grocery store and off-licence in 1928, subsequently making his own ice cream and winning a Grand Diploma of Merit at the Crystal Palace in London in 1936.

His ice cream became something of a Keighley institution – for years it was his custom to throw free samples to the crowds watching the gala procession!
