DISCOVERED behind a framed Keighley watercolour in Canada, this photograph records the aftermath of a fire which in 1908 destroyed the Strawberry Street moulding and planing mills and part of a timber shed belonging to Messrs Verity and Shuttleworth Ltd, joiners and cabinetmakers.
The Yorkshire press described this as “more fierce or awful in its grandeur” than any previous local fire. Members of a French party, who were being entertained in Keighley at the time, left a concert and dance to watch the fire instead! Damage was estimated at £10,000.
