SIR Isaac Holden, "the Grand Old Man" of Oakworth House, served as local MP till 1895 and the age of 88, when his "elastic step and no less elastic mind placed him on a par with many younger members."

Born in Scotland to a Cumberland father and a Scots mother, he had gained his position in politics, industry and society through sheer hard work. He was a strong believer in the benefits of fresh air and exercise, walking three or four miles every day. Fruit formed his main diet.

On his 90th birthday in 1897 he "was able to take pony exercise, and sat in the saddle with an erectness which was the subject of general remark." He died suddenly three months later.
