AN INNOCENT pleasure in simple things during pre-television childhoods is epitomised by these children watching a home-made puppet show at Highfield Infants’ School in 1954. The bare knee of one of the young puppeteers can be glimpsed beneath the table!
The photograph comes from an album illustrating such traditional infant school activities as little boys making models in sand and girls playing at nurses.
The scene recalls a pre-war report on Highfield Infants’ School which stressed a “free, friendly and curious spirit” being encouraged amongst the five-year-olds. It has been supplied by Miss K A Shoesmith, of Fell Lane, Keighley.
