THIS postcard view, photographed from Stanbury a century or more ago, includes several notable features.

In the centre foreground stands the Silent Inn, once popular with farmers, gamekeepers and sportsmen during the grouse-shooting season. Despite gaining a measure of fame when it appeared as the Eagle Inn in Ricroft of Withens, a historical novel by the former Yorkshire author Halliwell Sutcliffe, its licence has lapsed more than once during its long career.

Slightly farther back on its left is Ponden Mill, built originally for cotton during the Industrial Revolution and later changed to worsted. At the time of this photograph it would be run by R Sunderland and Son (Spinners) Ltd, never employing more than 30.

Farther back again on the left is Scartop Chapel, whose annual Sunday School anniversary or charity was traditionally held in the open air, centred on the Ponden Mill yard.

The photograph has been supplied by Mrs Rosamund Mitchell, of Grange Farm, Oakworth.
