LOCAL mill-owning families often became benefactors of places of worship.
In 1896 the future Sir John Brigg, worsted spinner and manufacturer of Calversyke Mill, contributed an interest-free loan of £500 towards the building of a Knowle Park Congregational Mission in Fell Lane, converting this to a gift six years later.
After his death in 1911, his portrait was “hung in the assembly room in the centre of the platform” at Knowle Park, while Keighley’s several Congregational churches contributed towards a memorial plaque at Devonshire Street, where he had served as senior deacon.
