THIS was the scene on the new Guard House estate on a chilly-looking May day in 1930 as children waited to set off on the first of their pre-war annual outings.
These were organised by a Guard House Social and Welfare Committee and paid for by members of the Brigg family, who had sold the site to Keighley Corporation for housing development.
This first trip took 200 children in five West Yorkshire Road Car Company buses to Malham, where they "made boisterous fun in the streets and raided the sweet shops" before walking to the cove and having tea at the Airedale Private Hotel.
They eventually returned home to Guard House "laiden with Malham rock".
The following year their destination was Kettlewell, in six motor-coaches belonging to Messrs Anderton Brothers.
By 1934 they were going to Morecambe in six West Yorkshire buses.
