AMONG the many worthy causes espoused at the start of the Great War by the mayor of Keighley, William Anderton Brigg, was the Keighley War Relief Fund.

Its broad aim was to alleviate the more immediate needs of soldiers' and sailors' dependents, though an enthusiastic ladies section was soon making and dispatching to every local Territorial a shirt, a pair of socks and two pocket handkerchiefs.

Subscriptions were canvassed and collections raised by a series of concerts during the late summer and autumn of 1914. Some took place in the Mechanics' Institute and the Hippodrome Theatre, but many were held outdoors when weather permitted, in Victoria and Lund parks and especially in the Town Hall Square.

Performers included the Salvation Army, Keighley Concertina and Borough bands, the Vocal and Glee Unions and Black Dyke and Foden's brass bands.

Here are members of the Silsden Brass Band, resplendent in their distinctive white tunics, who gave a concert in the Town Hall Square that September. Seated in the centre is singer Lillian Dillingham.
