MR Norman Barton, of Holme Wood Road, Keighley, snapped this view nearly half a century ago, looking down West Lane from near the corner of Luton Street. The area was then on the eve of dramatic change.

Keighley Parish Church and the Albert Hotel can be seen in the distance, but all the buildings on the right, beyond Cross Leeds Street, were soon to be demolished. The only survivor would be the Brown Cow public house.

The premises on the left were occupied by the club rooms of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes - familiarly known as "the Buffs" - who got their beer from Timothy Taylor's and shared the building with home furnishers Alfred Lord and Co, who also had a shop in High Street.
