THE present Salvation Army side of the High Street roundabout is still a small green town-centre oasis, but was formerly the site of this attractive little public garden.

The prominent roof and tower of St Peter's Church, seen in the background along Halifax Road, date this photograph as earlier than 1956 when the church was demolished. Notice too the forest of chimneys in the centre distance, representing the older close-knit streets of Halifax Road.

The building on the right formed part of the former Upper Green Congregational Chapel. Part of the three-storey block of shops on the left was demolished years ago to make way for an ambitious new development which has never happened.

The photograph has been supplied by Kevin Seaton, of Shann Lane, Keighley.
