NEW Devonshire House replaced this tall impressive place of worship, Devonshire Street Congregational Chapel, opened in 1856 with seating for 1,036.

Church membership was only about 160 at the time, but its supporters were confident that “this greatly enlarged edifice promises to be speedily filled”.

The chapel opened free of debt, thanks to the generosity of its congregation, which included such prominent Keighley mill-owning names as Clapham, Craven and most notably Brigg. It is said to have been a smart place for Sunday-morning worship, when coachmen would sit on the back row in order to slip out during the last hymn, to bring their carriages round to the front door.

Despite its solid appearance, the building was later found to be slightly moving, and was demolished in 1964.
