READERS may be able to throw some light on the identity of these jolly ladies on their victory float. They were probably taking part in the 1945 procession in what was known as Keighley's Victory Gala.
The wagon provides a possible clue insofar as it belonged to R Lister, of Black Hill Farm. The Keighley News of the time commented on how wartime petrol restrictions had encouraged "the return of the horse, for industrial transport purposes", with its consequent increased presence in gala processions.
Some fancy dress characters in 1945 reflected "the effect of war saving and salvage appeals", but there was still plenty of escapism with the likes of Chu Chin Chow, Marie Antoinette, a buccaneer, a desert chief, an early Victorian lady and a Turkish carpet seller.
The photograph has been supplied by Mr Kevin Seaton, of Shann Lane, Keighley.
