KEIGHLEY photographer George A Shore had obviously told everybody to smile, but these workers had good reason to be happy – it was the summer of 1945 and the Second World had just ended.
They worked in the inspection department at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Steeton, where Mr Shore was taking advantage of a relaxing of photographic restrictions, outdoors at least, to record such groups.
This example includes some nice human details. The woman fourth from the left at the front appears to have been squashed in at the last moment, and a girl perched at the top left is leaning forward because she thinks she may be off the edge of the picture.
At its peak the Steeton "Dump" employed more than 4,000, two-thirds of whom were women drafted in as an alternative to conscription into the armed services. They manufactured 204 million munition components.
