WITH men of military age serving in the armed forces, part-time responsibilities on the Second World War home front often devolved on those still too young for call up, as illustrated by this group of employees of Darling and Sellers Ltd, machine tool makers of Airedale Works, Keighley.

All are members of either the Home Guard, army cadets, Civil Defence or the Auxiliary Fire Service. At least half of them look little more than boys.

Jack Hodgson, sitting on the left of the bottom row, admitted that he "looked like a school boy". When he subsequently joined the army he was 5ft 4in tall and weighed 108lbs.
