HER Royal Highness the Princess Royal was in Keighley again during Wings for Victory Week in May, 1943. Here, as Commandant-in-Chief of the British Detachments of the Red Cross, she accompanies the mayor, Tom Snowden, along North Street.
She ceremonially marked a Town Hall Square indicator at £897,520 raised – this only half-way through the week, by the end of which Keighley’s total would have reached £1,453,147.
She also visited the Technical College, the Hospital Supplies Depot, WVS headquarters and the Woodbine Day Nursery for the children of war-working mothers. There she saw 47 youngsters having an ‘al fresco’ tea, wearing patriotic sun-bonnets made by the staff.
