THESE policemen and Police War Reservists were responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the Worth Valley during the Second World War.

The photograph was supplied many years ago by George Dykes, of Marsh Lane, Oxenhope, son of the late PC Arthur Dykes seated at the far right. Both featured in an Oxenhope sensation in 1939 when 17-year-old George, keeping his father company on his beat in the small hours, helped in a determined effort to apprehend two men they disturbed breaking into a house in Church Street.

Father and son were both carried some distance on the running-boards of an unlit getaway car while grappling with its occupants. Shots were fired during the struggle and both were thrown off, but resulting damage to the car enabled the Halifax police to arrest the culprits the following week.
