THIS welter of youngsters were being entertained at a Christmas party put on by Keighley Liberals in 1928.

The photographer has graded them approximately by age, and some of the tots at the front seem apprehensive of the photographic process – presumably the flash of magnesium powder.

Seasonal children's parties were popular on a large scale. In 1928 the Keighley Conservative Women's Association organised one for 350, and the Keighley police provided another for a similar number of poor children. Pupils of the Keighley Boys Grammar School sat down to a Christmas dinner at which no less than the mayor of the borough helped serve the pudding!

The photograph has been supplied by Mr Michael Shearing, of High Spring Gardens Lane, whose future mother, standing slightly upwards and left of centre, has been identified at the time by a cross and a letter M for Mary.
