THIS view, from a postcard sent from Keighley in January 1907, presumably shows Christmas in 1906 in the Keighley and District Victoria Hospital, where both patients and staff were described as spending "a very pleasant Christmas-tide".

There was seasonal food and the wards, as seen here, were suitably decorated. Other festive traditions seem to have been remarkably elaborate. Patients' stockings were hung up "for Santa Claus" on Christmas Eve, those of the adults being filled with "useful articles" and the children's with toys and sweets.

Customarily the Mayor and Mayoress paid a visit, and during the evening of Christmas Day the nurses gave a concert. Staff had their own Christmas dinner on Boxing Day.

This appears to show a children's ward. If so, these patients would have been allowed to invite their friends in for tea on Christmas Day.

The photograph has been supplied by Mr Kevin Seaton, of Shann Lane, Keighley.
