SOME idea of conditions during the severe winter of 1947 can be gauged from this typical view of a car inching its way along Slippery Ford Lane beyond Goose Eye.

Minutes of Keighley Town Council spell out the statistics: “On 3 February, 1,357 man-hours were worked by 144 men. Eight motor lorries were ploughing for 88 hours, and there were 61 hours in gritting and snow removal by four motor lorries. Ploughing started at 3am and two ploughs broke down under the strain."

“Dear both of you,” opens a postcard from Keighley on February 19. “A few lines to say that the snow is still with us. It’s ever so cold. Got the truck mended again.”

Little did the sender realise that she was barely a fortnight into seven weeks of blizzards!
