ONCE the toll system was discontinued, many such houses became private residences, like this Utley example in Bar House Lane, which served as a portion of the Keighley and Kendal Turnpike Road from 1782 until its re-routing along Skipton Road in 1825.
As this photograph suggests, this Old Bar House was picturesque to look at but less than idyllic to live in.
Prior to 1938 the boundary between the former Keighley Borough and a Keighley Rural District ran through the middle of this building, necessitating both authorities having to take out demolition orders in 1932.
