SIGNS proliferate in this between-the-wars view down Low Street, Keighley – Redman's Good Bacon Shop, Driver's Farm Produce Stores, Jay's Furnishing Stores, Abraham Altham Ltd, at that time a tea merchants doubling as a railway ticket agency, and Remsden's Stone Trough Ales at the Black Horse public house.
Typically, people are walking in the roadway, one man even stopping to chat with his child's pram off the pavement and a car approaching.
Even when traffic ran both ways, people traditionally walked in the road in Low Street. A one-way system was eventually introduced in 1948, and pedestrianisation followed in 1972.
But oddly enough, the present ambiguous situation in Changegate – the top end of Low Street – with vehicles and pedestrians sharing the same space, reflects the habit of generations.
