THIS unusual Edwardian view of a woodwork class at the Keighley Trade and Grammar School has been supplied by Michael Shearing, of High Spring Gardens Lane, whose grandfather, ET Shearing, died suddenly in 1919 as first assistant master in the junior department. He had taught there for 22 years and had been involved in school sports and concerts.

The photograph may date from 1904 when Mr Shearing married and was presented with "a handsome marble clock and side ornaments, suitably engraved". Woodwork pupils also made him a book cabinet embellished with a quotation from the American poet Longfellow:

"The love of learning, the sequester'd nooks,

And all the sweet serenity of books".

ET Shearing was well-known in local sports circles, being a member of the Keighley and District Junior Football Association and the West Yorkshire Football Commission.
