ELOQUENT of the days when shop assistants wore watch-chains and shop boys stiff collars, this was John L Morley’s clothing, outfitting and jewellery establishment in the early 20th century.

In its heyday this well-known firm ran two stores in Keighley, in High Street and East Parade, and three in Bradford.

When Morley’s closed down in 1988, it was concentrating on home furnishing, but a hundred years earlier had advertised as “certainly the cheapest house in the trade for Men’s Youths’ and Boys’ Clothing of every description”. Special lines included “Cord, Mole and Fustian Trousers, at surprising prices”, to say nothing of “Morley’s shirts at 1s 11d”.

“See the Windows!” exclaimed Morley’s advertisements. “Examine the Stock!” Certainly, judging by this display, the prospective customer was given every opportunity to browse.
