THE Parkwood flats help pinpoint the location of this desolate scene of preparation for Worth Way in the 1960s.
The site includes the tallest chimney and some of the buildings seen in another photograph on this page.
This represents the sombre aftermath of Keighley’s industrial glory-days when we boasted “one tenth of the mills, nearly one-eighth of the spindles, and nearly one-twelfth of the looms employed in the worsted trade throughout the United Kingdom”, besides nearly monopolising “the trade of making worsted spinning machinery” and producing looms, lathes and machine-tools.
In a single year in the 1870s Keighley manufactured 64,000 washing and wringing machines and 10,000 sewing machines.
