"DEMONSTRATIONS at Silsden, July 21, 1906", says the caption of this old postcard, but a demonstration had a less militant meaning a century ago – it described a show of strength, in this case that of the scholars of local nonconformist Sunday Schools.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, and these best-dressed children who attended the Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School together with those from the United Methodist Free Church, walked in procession around Silsden. At several points they sang hymns, afterwards enjoying tea, buns and games.

This photograph has been taken during the singing, as the bystanders are holding hymn sheets and members of the Silsden Brass Band are playing on the right.
