THIS unidentified happening – possibly simply the photographer setting up his tripod – has drawn a group of bystanders in the centre of Edwardian Silsden.

The adults stand back, while the children, more interested in the camera, have moved closer.

The impressive building on the right was the then-new Silsden Conservative Club, built in 1900 when it was described as occupying "the best street site in the town".

Its erection must have seemed an ambitious project to the club's 150 paid-up members at the time, but they benefited from the rents of shops on the ground floor.

This scene evokes the comparative tranquility of an Edwardian small town centre on a bright day, though there are what look like horse droppings in the road.

The photograph has been supplied by Kevin Seaton, of Shann Lane, Keighley.
