THIS was the aftermath of the fire which destroyed much of Bridgehouse Mills at Haworth in 1912.
Smoke had been spotted around midnight and Haworth District Council's fire brigade promptly summoned "by electric call", but the developing blaze was soon too much for "Captain Smith and his eight or nine men".
Keighley Corporation brigade refused to help because neither the Bridgehouse Mills owners nor occupiers were subscribers. The Bingley District Council brigade did respond but made slow progress uphill to Cross Roads, arriving to find the four-storey premises gutted.
Notice on the left the huge waterwheel, described at the time as "a familiar object to passengers on the Worth Valley Railway".
The photograph has been supplied by Ian Brierley, of Bridgehouse Lane, Haworth.
